Motivation is Not Needed, Discipline is

Don’t tell me some of the most successful people in the world are motivated everyday. Don’t tell me they got by on motivation that persuaded them to work. The fact is you aren’t going to be motivated everyday. This is why discipline is better than motivation.

You don’t need to be motivated to get up at 4:30 in the morning everyday, but you do it anyways because you know it’s the only way to reach your goals.

You don’t need to be motivated to work your hardest on everything you encounter every single day.

You don’t need to be motivated to chase your dreams every moment of your life. You just need discipline.

Discipline will take you so much farther than any motivation will.


Discipline is the control you have over your body to do what you need to do. You don’t need to convince yourself to be disciplined, its an act habit. By acting, instead of thinking, you create a disciplined habit.

You aren’t doing things because you want to. You are doing it because you need to, because success doesn’t come cheap.

Motivation slows processes down tremendously. With motivation you must convince yourself to do it. Motivation is not a long-lasting way to do things. It only lasts so long. It is merely the beginning.

Instead, you should be motivated to become disciplined, not the other way around. Don’t discipline yourself to become motivated all the time because that’s just not logical! Emotions are temporary, mindsets are forever, and motivation is an emotion.

Although it’s very annoying, we can’t wake up everyday refreshed and ready to hit the day hard with huge momentum and beat every obstacle in our way. With discipline, we don’t need to wake up refreshed everyday. We simply get to work and focus on whatever is needed for hours on end, not because we are ready and in the mood, but because we have to and know we need to.

If people didn’t do any work whenever they weren’t motivated, when would they work? How many inventions would we miss out on? How many companies would shut down?

Most people I know aren’t motivated 7 days a week. Hell, most people I know aren’t motivated 5 days a week. Reality is, most people will only be motivated to work hard 3 days a week. What about those other 4 days? Success requires more than 3 days a week.

That’s why discipline matters so much because compared to motivation, without discipline motivation is useless. Without motivation, discipline remains the same.

  1. Hey there, it’s Matt from FB. I love the content of this post, but just like the comment you left in my post, it’s a bit short and for me doesn’t have much in the direction of how I can apply this in my life.

    Each person has a bit of a different blogging style. When I read and write blog posts, I personally am looking for a read which is 5 minuets or longer. I need that power of story and direction.
