How I Made -$128.38 In My First Month Blogging

December 2017 Income Report

I’m very late to give an income report on blogging for December, however I did document a lot of information for this post. I launched this blog on December 5th with 10 blog posts. I ended the month with 1 more additional blog post.

I’m writing this income report not to show off my earnings or to brag about my blog, but to provide resources for people who are also thinking about starting a blog of their own ( not that there is much to brag about ).

When I was first starting out to think about having a blog of my own, income reports were a HUGE thing I read up on. I wanted to see the possibilities of having a blog of my own and how other people were doing it successfully.

I hope with this information, you can see how you can apply some of the strategies and work ethics to your own blog to grow in the same way or better than I did! If not, comment down below or email me directly if you have some questions that could help you out on your own blog!

Traffic:

I will admit, I had a head start when I started blogging because I had a lot of family members check over my blog and tell me what they thought. This led to over 70 views in the first day I launched.

Which is a lot for a blog just starting out on making a place for itself in the internet. But of course, I only got a few views a day for the remaining days of December.

In December I got a lofty 173 views. 73 of those views came from the first week I had launched. Which is clearly from the family members.

Because I am posting this a few weeks into January, you can get a preview of my next income report because my views for January are already more than December’s.

Income:

Expenses: $128.39

BlueHost: $99.39

ConvertKit: $29.00

Income: $0.01

Ad-sense: $0.01

Affiliate: $0.00

Total Income: -$128.38

The income in Google Ad-sense was not collected though because of their $100 minimum.

My goals for next month, is to earn half of my investment back. Which comes out to be around $65.

How to Start Your Very Own Blog

What I Used:

Disclosure and quick interruption – I started my blog on Bluehost and have now partnered with them to get you a huge discount rate. If you purchase hosting through the link on this post, I’ll earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. They are a great service and I’m happy to promote them!

BlueHost:

I used BlueHost as my Self-Hosting service company. Honestly they helped a lot because I thought it was going to be SO HARD to start my blog. I had believed that I was going to need to start learning to code to get my own website if I ever wanted to make a business out of it.

When I first heard about BlueHost, I was skeptic about it because it was so cheap! $3.95 a MONTH! How could they possibly provide a quality service for so cheap??

I’m so glad I read up more about their service because they make setting up your website SO SIMPLE.

They have it set up to where you purchase and create your account ( you pay on a yearly basis, just a heads up! ) and you can connect to WordPress with a few simple clicks if you don’t know coding! Perfect for people excited to start a blog, but not wanting to learn code!

For people who don’t know what WordPress is, WordPress is a website building program/software that already has thousands of styles to choose from! It gives you a lot of opportunity to make your website your own!

I highly recommend BlueHost to anyone thinking about setting up a website of their own! You can click here or click the banner below to get started NOW!

ConvertKit:

Convertkit is an email newsletter service made simple. I’m not completely aware of how mailchimp or other email newsletter programs work, but this one is amazing.

Convertkit is also SUPER simple to use, it allows you to send emails, set up sequences, create forms to apply to your posts, and set up landing pages. This is vital to bloggers, because the goal is to have reoccurring readers.

Convertkit makes this possible. It helps create loyal readers and possible future clients/customers.

If you are thinking about starting a blog and need an email newsletter program, I will always highly recommend Convertkit!

What I Did:

This month was slow because I was still getting used to working all the time and focusing my time on being productive towards this blog. I had to learn how to put a lot of time aside for this blog each day, which was a hard transfer for me!

However I started getting the hang of it by the end of this month, simply because it was turning into a habit. I had been working from 9 a.m.-11 a.m., 2 p.m.- 4 p.m., and 6 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. everyday towards the end of this month. A total of 8 hours working on this blog each and every day.

I feel like that’s a huge reason why I got the amount of visitors I did. When I wasn’t working, I was learning how I could work more efficiently and more effectively.

Blogging is like learning a whole new subject in school. I told myself this throughout the month to keep me working and not neglect this work.

I believe blogging is a new subject because no one naturally knows how blogging works. There is so much about it that you have to learn such as advertising, creating content, and designing a brand that is consistent among all social media platforms.

Those skills come from experience more than anything. It’s hard to read up on how to create a brand look that is consistent. You kind of have to work and learn what is working and what isn’t.

Most of the time I was working was spent on Pinterest. Pinterest is typically the biggest traffic coordinator for blogs because of the way it’s set up. I actually got 47 referrals from Pinterest. For comparison, my second highest referral was through Instagram which got 15 referrals.

Pinterest is really a search engine more than a social media platform and hell of a good one too.

Which means consistency, relevancy, and eye-catching images can earn you views on your blog quickly.

Next month I plan on utilizing Boardbooster’s looping tool and Tailwind’s scheduling tool with Pinterst. More on that in the next income report!
